Mind Map Collage

Description

FIVE WEEK CLASS. Ages 7 - 14, Meets once a week on Tuesday, 5:30 - 6:30pm CST. Dates: Feb 23 - March 23

What is a mind map? A mind map is a tool to visually capture the thinking that goes on inside your head acting as an easy and fun way to brainstorm innovative thoughts and ideas, gather knowledge and recall memories. Young artists will spend five sessions mind mapping a central theme of their interest to produce an artistic mind map of their own using mixed media collage. We will study the work of contemporary Mixed Media artists and creative writing techniques. Themes can range from identity to character study; personal interests; social, political or environmental cares. Class culminates in a live gallery show for family and friends! TEACHER: Paige Valente

DAILY AGENDA:

Session 1: Students will learn from looking at examples of other Mind Maps how to begin their personal mind mapping project. They will explore ideas for a central theme and how to expand their subject using key themes. Themes can range from identity to character study; personal interests; social, political or environmental cares. Students will be asked to return the session with a rough draft of their exploration as well as the assignment to begin gathering materials to begin collage construction.

Session 2: Today, we will take a look at examples of collage and ways to work as a mixed media artist to guide us as we begin working on our layered projects.

Session 3: Session will begin with a share of our work thus far. New techniques will be shared for inspiration. We will work most of the hour on our collage. Some kids may work quickly and begin to finish while others may need more time. Artists that finish early may choose to generate another mind map about a different theme or create a separate piece from a key theme. It’s never ending!

Session 4: Our fourth session begins again with a share and personalized creative direction from the teacher and peers is an option if the artist desires. Art making continues!

Session 5: Today we put on our finishing touches and prepare for our parent gallery presentation at the end of class. Family and friends log on for the last 20 minutes of class!
