Clear, Precise, and Concise: The Keys to Creating Captivating Ads

Become an ad creator for the day!

Get a glimpse into the process of "writing copy" for ads like the ones you see on billboards, bus stops, magazines, or newspapers. In this class, students will learn the key elements and the process that goes into creating a successful slogan, tagline, or claim used for ads. They will examine several examples of advertisements they might see on the street or magazines and will identify which ones they think are successful or effective. Students will also put their newly acquired knowledge to practice by creating their own slogan, tagline, or claim. They will only have a few minutes to come up with something captivating and/or engaging which will help them develop quick-thinking skills. Students will also get to interact with each other by talking about the different ads presented and explaining how or why they are effective. Finally, students will work together to create a captivating ad for a (fictional) food company.
This is a one time class and students do not need any previous knowledge on advertising or creative writing.

Class Outline:
1. Introduction to advertising: What is advertising and what makes for good copy?
2. 3 characteristics of effective ads.
3. Tips and guidelines
4. Practice with examples
5. Your turn to create.

Students will not need any materials to participate in class. They can bring a notebook to write down ideas and take notes, but it is not required.
