~ ¡Vamos a jugar ajedrez! Let’s Play Chess! ~ Learn Spanish and Chess with Me!

Description

These recurring classes are intended for all Spanish learners! Each week learners will practice speaking in Spanish while playing chess focusing on conversational skills. The instructor will teach the chess piece of the week and then play “ajedrez” with the class. Students will have the opportunity to read and speak in Spanish with the instructor as well as the group. The class will mostly be Spanish immersion-focused. Students will be competing with the instructor and each other. Each week we will read the instructions in both English and Spanish and review the vocabulary. We will focus on a piece weekly and practice playing with just that piece and add one more week after week.

In every class students will learn or practice using the following vocabulary in Spanish:

  • Chess piece names - Las piezas del ajedrez

  • How to give directions in Spanish (left, right, etc.)

  • Other conversational vocabulary

Lesson Plan:

Lesson 1: Pawn - Peón - Students will learn how to move the “peón”.

Lesson 2: Rook - Torre - In class students will learn how to move the “torre”.

Lesson 3: Knight - Caballo - The instructor will be focusing on the “caballo”.

Lesson 4: Review - repaso - This week’s focus will be to review the chess pieces learned in previous lessons.

Lesson 5: Bishop - Alfil - Students will learn how to move the “alfil”.

Lesson 6: Queen - Reina - In class students will learn how to move the “reina”.

Lesson 7: King - Rey - The instructor will be focusing on the “rey”.

Lesson 8: Review - repaso - This week’s focus will be to review the chess pieces learned in previous lessons along with the instructions provided in Spanish for each piece.

I look forward to seeing you in my class!

All students need a writing utensil and a journal or lined paper to write down the vocabulary words.

Parents:
Two items will be emailed to enrolled students:
1. A PDF will be emailed that will have both English and Spanish instructions on how to play “ajedrez”. This will need to be printed so that the student has these “flashcards” available as we play to reinforce what we learn in class.

2. The Google Slides where we will play chess together. This will need to be open side by side with Zoom.
