Chemistry Experiment: Acid-Base Concentration

Description

The easy chemistry experiment for September is Titration. We meet the last 3 Tuesdays of September, 2021.

We are going to make a small chemical reactor, in a water bottle. It's like a baking soda-vinegar volcano, except we won't let it erupt. We will precisely combine small amounts of acid and base to learn about the properties of the substances. It's an all time classic experiment known as titration, and we'll do a fun, simple version right in your kitchen at home. (Building the experiment at home is optional.)

Learners may participate in the group experiment hands-on or hands-off. Everybody brings paper, pen (not pencil) and a ruler to make a Data Table, record the experimental data, and take notes. Optionally, learners may build the experiment at home by collecting the materials (not more than $10) and following the procedure given by the teacher during class.

We meet for three 1-hour meetings to complete the experiment.

Week 1: Materials and Procedure. Bring paper and pen (not pencil) to write down the procedure!

Week 2: Group Experiment. Bring paper, pen (not pencil), and a ruler to make a Data Table. Optionally, bring your experiment as described in the Week 1 class.

Week 3: More Experiments and Discussion. Bring the Data Table from Week 2 and a pen to record data. Optionally, bring your experiment or experimental data collected at home. We will complete experiments and discuss the science.

You can optional build the experiment at home. Bring paper and pen to record data.
