Let's Be Scientists! ~ Hands-On Science ~ Ages 4 to 8

Description

Class Description:

These recurring hands-on science experiment classes are intended for students ages 4 to 8. Science doesn’t have to be boring! Science can be magical, bizarre, and awesome all at the same time! In each class, learners will practice a variety of educational topics. The instructor will use the scientific method to lead all of the experiments. The instructor will explain the experiment and afterward, the class will discuss the scientific facts to help students understand the why behind the results. Students will complete the hands-on science experiment and then have a discussion with the class.

Academics:

Students will learn the following through experiments that will cover biology, astronomy, physics, earth science, and chemistry.

Students will work on identifying the following:

  1. Purpose

  2. Research

  3. Hypothesis

  4. Experiment

  5. Analysis

  6. Conclusion

Objectives:

As scientists, students will determine what the problem is and determine a solution. Through the experiments and the research, students will learn to find answers and solve problems. This class is designed to introduce topics, like mean, median, and mode, among a variety of other vocabulary words to young students in a fun way. The goal is for students to test out and become familiar with the different terms, not to become experts. Let's be scientists!

2/1/21 - Lesson 26: Ramp - The students will create a winding mountain road and see that the mountain is actually an inclined plane.

2/4/21 - Lesson 27: Paper Airplanes - Let’s fly some airplanes! In this fun activity, students will make a variety of airplanes. We will test them out and compare our designs.

2/8/21 - Lesson 28: Straw Bridge - The students will build a bridge using straws and learn about different types of bridges and what the purpose of a bridge.

2/15/21 - Lesson 29: Tower Construction - The class will construct a tower out of straws and tape only. The students are to brainstorm and design their tower. Then test to see if their tower has a strong base. The instructor will also talk about different types of towers.

2/18/21 - Lesson 30: Popsicle Stick Catapult - Catapults! How fun! Students will be taught how to build their own catapults and test to see how far it can throw. The instructor will talk about the different types of catapults and its purpose.

3/1/21 - Lesson 31: Egg Protector - Let’s get cracking! In this super fun experiment, students will construct an egg protector and test it out with an actual egg! The instructor will discuss about eggs and together as a class, students will brainstorm what they could have done better.
