Dancing Baking Soda: Sodium Carbonate Experiment

The easy chemistry experiment for October is making Calcium Carbonate, also known as the dancing baking soda reaction. We meet the last 2 Wednesdays of October, 2021.

We are going to make baking soda dance by heating it. The dancing baking soda transforms to another substance. It's super fun to watch, and leaners can optionally build it (with adult supervision for the heating). Dr Scott will bring a simple kitchen scale to precisely measure how the reaction works, and learners will record data as the experiment progresses.

Learners may participate in the group experiment hands-on or hands-off. Everybody brings paper, pen (not pencil) and a ruler to make a Data Table, record the experimental data, and take notes. Optionally, learners may build the experiment at home by collecting the materials (not more than $10) and following the procedure given by the teacher during class.

We meet for two 1-hour meetings to complete the experiment.

Week 1 (Oct 20): Materials and Procedure. Bring paper and pen (not pencil) to write down the procedure!

Week 2 (Oct 27): Group Experiment. Bring paper, pen (not pencil), and a ruler to make a Data Table. Optionally, bring your experiment as described in the Week 1 class.

Bring paper and pen to record data. You can optionally build the experiment at home. You'll need baking soda plus a safe heat source.

Reviews and Ratings

  • Dr. Scott does an excellent job both communicating with me, the parent, and in sparking my 16-year-old's imagination. My son can't get enough of these classes.
